New Album!!

New York 10/20/07

Column by Dan Swartz

This column was in the Journal Gazette a few days ago, written by Dan Swartz, an artist who just moved back to Fort Wayne from NYC, and I found it on FWOB (see links to the right). If you came here from FWOB, then you have probably already seen this but I wanted to pull a different excerpt than Mitch did.

There is an obvious difference between Fort Wayne and New York City, and the former will most likely never have the same cultural force as the latter. But Fort Wayne has many things that are impossible to find in New York as well, for instance, starry nights, clean streets, ridiculously low rents, the idea of “just chilling” with friends, cheap food and beer, and real nature. I couldn’t help notice that as so many people told me that I was crazy to move back, there was also a sign of longing in their faces for the things that I described to them and the confidence that I had in knowing that this is the city that I desired, minus the billionaires, skyscrapers, museums, celebrities and, in general, sublimity that sway so many.

Are You Ready for This? I know you've been waiting...

This is the bathroom you see when you first walk in the door. The window doesnt close so as we move towards winter, the bathroom can get quite chilly. There is also a subway map as a curtain so people can not see us showering. Classy...I know. Now we move towards the kitchen/living room/family room/study. It is hard to get a feel for how small this common area really is, so trust me, it's small.

The couch, television, and kitchen are all within 5 feet of each other. There is soooo much room.
This is my room. Sorry mom, try not to cringe. It's not dirty...just messy. You know.

This is Jacob's room. Very nice.

Note the blowup mattress which I think is much better than my actual mattress.
Feel free to post questions about our wonderful living arrangements!

Lessons Learned Through Living in New York City

By Jacob Krouse
Contributing Editor

1) People spit everywhere openly in public – on the street, on the side walk, on doors, out windows, and on each other (yes – I saw a girl spit on a guy playfully).

2) Living in New York makes you lazy, in one sense. You only want to go places that don’t require getting on the subway, although you do know you’ll have to walk to your destination.
  • When living anywhere else in America, one would never think of driving 15-20 minutes to go to a restaurant, but 15-20 minutes on the subway is for some reason unbearable.

3) All those neat street and subway performers get old after a week. At first, the drummer you see and hear while waiting for your subway seems nice, when you’ve lived in New York for a month and you see the same drummer every day… he gets old.

4) You have no sense of distance when living in New York. Walking 10 blocks seems ridiculous, but it’s only a mile. DePauw’s campus is over a mile across.
  • Also, you can walk roughly half of Manhattan in a little over an hour – walking an hour in Lexington wouldn’t even get me downtown.

5) You will have your personal space violated each morning commute – deal with it. Subways are crowded and people here don’t care if you don’t want to be squished – they want to get to work.

6) If you live in New York, you will become a jerk. Sorry for those from New York, but it’s true.
  • Why do New Yorkers walk so fast from place to place? Because their time is important. Why do New Yorkers cut each other off, bump into people walking down the street, and slam themselves into subway cars that they clearly will not fit into? Because they think their time is more important than others. I do the same thing – weaving in and out of human traffic like I’m Joseph Addai (I’ve even knocked someone over).
  • Additionally, the elevator becomes a source of hatred. Daniel and I work on the 30th floor of our building and thus feel entitled to go straight to our floor with no stops. We get frustrated with anyone who stops on a floor below ours. Why are we anymore special than anyone else going to work?

7) If you live in New York, you’ve been exposed to every kind of germ imaginable – you’ll never get sick anywhere else.

This is why I recommend anyone in the New York area take a break from the hectic pace of NYC. Go somewhere where the air isn’t polluted, the trees aren’t surrounded in pavement, and people don’t think of the rest of the nation as “fly over states.”

Brunswick in The New York Times

If anyone is interested, here is an article from the New York Times website that talks about a newsletter that we recently sent out and talks a little bit about activist shareholders (if youre into that sort of thing). Also at the bottom, you can click on a link to the actual newsletter itself. This just gives you a little insight into what we do here at the Brunswick Group.

My Short (But Oh So Bittersweet) Relationship With the New York Yankees

The Yankees were down to the final pitch of the season...the Bronx was burning...and my short relationship with the New York Yankees came to an end. In mid-September I attended a Yankees game (only my third MLB game), and I was instantly a fan. From that point on, they were my team, mostly because I spent twenty dollars on a hat, and an investment of that magnitude guarantees my die hard support. I screamed "Hip-Hip-Jorge" and "Joba the Hut". I even hated the Red Sox, for absolutely no reason at all. But tonight it came to an end, along with Joe Torre's career. Long live the evil empire. Reporting live from New York, this has been Daniel Harrison

Yankees!!

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=271007110

The Yankees will be playing another game against the Indians tomorrow night. Jacob, Matt, and I watched the game tonight at Buffalo Wild Wings. We are thinking about going to watch tomorrow's game somewhere around the stadium (like we have anything better to do). I probably won't be back in New York any time soon so it would be fun to have the Yankees make it far in the postseason while we am here to enjoy it.

A Lot of Things

We will start out with an overview (in list form):
  1. I saw the president of Iran. Apparently...the United States Mission to the UN is in my office building. Jacob and I just assumed the UN security outside were just there to keep the neighborhood safe (not true). The Iranian Mission to the UN is right next door. So Jacob and I were going to lunch and there were a lot of people gathered on the sidewalk and a huge motorcade with A LOT of armed men. Next thing we know, the President of Iran is coming out right in front of us. That was an interesting experience given the fact that he was causing quite a stir in New York at the time. When we saw him, he was on his way to speak at Columbia, if you hadn't heard about that already.
  2. I have been able to work at a couple very luxurious venues in the last couple weeks. As a result I am collecting water bottles from those locations. This might sound weird to you, but the water bottles they have at some really fancy hotels are nicer than the cups that Jacob and I use in our apartment. The bottles are fancy glass bottles and in the store this bottle of water would cost like ten dollars. On the other hand, Jacob and I wash plastic Solo cups to reuse every day. You would keep the water bottles as well.
  3. I am a New York Yankees fan now. It is as simple as that. The game that I went to was awesome. Unfortunately though, at this moment, they are down in the series against the Indians and if they lose tonight, they are out.
  4. I had a great weekend with my Aunt Mary and Uncle Pat and Julia, Meg, and Johnny. My camera went dead so I dont have any pictures but hopefully Aunt Mary will send some to me! (Please send some pictures Aunt Mary).

Posts from Old Blog (in case you wanted to read them again)

Due to popular demand, here are the posts from the old blog. Enjoy!

A Long Awaited Update

Hey everyone, sorry this has taken so long. I have been half busy and half sick, both of which have prevented me from updating this. This picture you see with this post is Arthur Ashe Stadium at the US Open. I saw Djokovic play there and he went on to play in the finals against Federer. The whole US Open was a lot of fun and it was nice because you could just go from one stadium to another and see different matches. I was only there for about 4 hours and I saw at least part of about 4 different matches. It was very fun. You can see the pictures by clicking here. Another fun thing in the last week was going to see the game show Power of 10. The show is on CBS and the host is Drew Carey. Last Wednesday I got an email at work saying that there were tickets open for the taping of the show and Jacob and I thought what the heck, we don’t have anything else to do tonight. So we went and got in line. We were towards the back of the line but when you get in the producers seat you wherever they want based on how they want the audience to look and Jacob and I were dressed in our work clothes and we looked nice enough I guess so they put us in the front row of the audience. It was a lot of fun given that the tickets were free. Drew Carey is a nice guy in real life and very funny as well. If you happen to read this post before Wednesday night (the 12th), we are going to be on tonight, Wednesday the 12th, and the show airs at 8pm on CBS. Jacob and I are in the front row and the audience is kind of circled around the stage so we are on the left side of your tv, right behind the contestant and whenever they show wide shots of the audience you can see me in a blue shirt and Jacob in a green shirt. Look for us. Think of it like a game, it will be fun, I promise. If you are really curious, I can tell you the outcome of the show before it happens. But I won’t ruin it right now for all the loyal fans. I hope everyone is doing well and if there is anything you want to know about in New York, just ask!

Kenny Chesney Live

Last night, Jacob and I went to see Kenny Chesney at Madison Square Garden. Now I know what you are thinking, “But Daniel (and Jacob) couldn’t you just see Kenny Chesney back home in Indiana (or Kentucky)?” The answer is yes....but...not at THE GARDEN! It was absolutely amazing. The thing about seeing a show there is that the performers are genuinely just as excited to be performing there as you are to be seeing them there, which makes for a much better show. The opening act, Pat Greene, said that it was the most memorable night of his musical career. On a side note, we started out two rows from the back and then a very inebriated person got sick in front of us and we got moved to the press box (where we were much more comfortable). It was a unique situation that ended up benefitting us greatly. Above this post is a video compilation from the concert so if you wait a minute or two it should load and you can watch it. I won’t keep it up for long though because it takes up a bit of space. I’m sorry for the shaky camera work, it was my still camera and it isn’t exactly easy to hold it steady at a concert. Also...Click Here for the Kenny Chesney Concert Pictures. And as always....Keep checking back!

Day 10 - Still Alive

Yes Mike, I am still alive, but only barely. Apparently one cannot survive on chicken fingers and frozen pizza alone. Speaking of that, I am trying to find out some easy cheap things to make so if anyone has any easy recipes that I could possibly figure out, please email them to me. Keep in mind that I have one mixing spoon, one pot (without a lid), one frying pan, and one pan for the oven. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Today I walked through the financial district in southern Manhattan and it was very nice, albeit hot. You can see the pictures from today right here by clicking right here. You can see the obvious pictures from Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange. The whole financial district was like a ghost town, which surprised me. I guess it makes sense because it was a Saturday but besides some random tourists taking pictures there was virtually no one there. The later pictures were taken from the Staten Island Ferry, which is my new favorite free thing to do in New York City. The ferry runs every thirty minutes between Manhattan and Staten Island and is free for everyone. It goes right by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and you get an amazing view of the Manhattan skyline. On a more expensive note, Jacob and I went to the Laugh Factory on Friday night and had an amazing time. We sat in the front row and got picked on by every comedian, but it was all in good fun. While walking out of the comedy club, Jacob and I were approached and offered “coke”. My initial reaction was, “No thank you, I just had two cokes in the Laugh Factory.” He was offering cocaine but I didn’t realize that until he offered crack (I also refused the crack). Maybe by the end of December I will be a little more street smart, but until then, I will just have to amuse the drug dealers with my naivety. Keep watching for the apartment video. I tried to make it today but I had a problem with my camera so I have to redo it soon. Don’t forget to leave your comments and or questions!

Observations

I have been in New York for about a week now so it is time for some general observations.

1. There are NO free refills. What Jacob and I always thought was normal was actually a luxury of the midwest and is not enjoyed by New Yorkers at most eating establishments.
2. If the mice in the subway station are dead, you really don’t need to be on that particular subway train.
3. Somewhat related to number 1, nothing is free in New York. Walking in Central Park is free as long as you dont get thirsty enough to need to purchase a drink.
4. Don’t assume that everyone speaks English, they definitely do not. On the bright side, the shopkeeper below my apartment loves to laugh at me attempting to speak to him in Spanish.
5. If you leave a plate in the sink (even if you rinsed it off) you will get cockroaches.
6. The definition of “no personal space” is rush hour on the subway.
7. On the bright side, the best music you will ever hear is in the subway station during rush hour.
8. If you have a couch in your apartment, at some point, someone will call you and want to sleep on it.

Thats all for now. ENJOY!

First Few Days

Alright well I have been here for about 3 days now. We have an apartment in Williamsburg which is technically a really cool neighborhood. We are actually in the Puerto Rican neighborhood so I have been practicing my Spanish with the guy who works at the corner grocery store below us. We got a good deal on the apartment which I love and we have a lot of space. I actually have my own room with a bed, which was actually beginning to look more unlikely than you may know. I was told two things about finding an apartment: 1. It is the worst experience you will ever have in your life and 2. It will all work out in the end. I didn’t believe either of those and they were both very very true. In the next couple of days I will post pictures and maybe a video of the apartment so if you are curious what $1,250 plus utilities buys you in New York City, keep checking back! So far I have spent a bit of time in Times Square, gone to a Today Show concert at 6 in the morning, and walked around Manhattan a lot. It has been a lot of fun. Leave comments and I will answer any questions you have or tell you anything you want to know. I would much rather do that than just talk incessantly. Thanks!

New Blog!

Hey everyone, welcome to my new blog. In case you are curious, my old one was a mac website which expired after two months (which I had forgotten about). Instead of paying $100 to renew it, I decided to switch to a free blog, so here I am. I hope everyone found this and was not too confused if they tried to go visit the old one.

Also here are some new pictures. Enjoy!
